Soundbar vs Speakers
A soundbar is not a compromised speaker system. It is a different answer to a different question — and there is one thing it physically cannot do, no matter how much you spend.

We do not currently cover soundbars, and we should say why before comparing them: the soundbar market is dominated by products whose manufacturers publish almost nothing measurable — no sensitivity, no frequency response with a tolerance, frequently no amplifier power at all. Our criteria are built on published specifications, and a category that publishes none is one we cannot rank honestly.
That is a statement about our method, not a verdict on soundbars. So this page compares the formats on what is actually knowable: physics, box count, and what each one is for.
The thing a soundbar physically cannot do
Put sound behind you.
A soundbar sits under the television. Everything it produces originates from a line roughly a meter wide, in front of you. “Virtual surround” processing works by bouncing sound off side walls and ceilings to create the impression of sources elsewhere, and in the right room it can be convincing.
But the technique depends entirely on the room having the surfaces it expects. An open-plan space with a glass wall on one side, a vaulted ceiling, or a seat that is not centered will all defeat it, and no amount of processing recovers a reflection that never happened. A discrete surround speaker sitting behind you needs no such cooperation from your architecture.
Soundbars with separate wireless surround speakers exist and they solve exactly this — at which point you have a soundbar, two surround boxes, a subwoofer and four power outlets, which is a system, not a bar.
The bass problem is a physics problem
Producing 40 Hz at a useful level requires moving a lot of air, which requires cone area and excursion, which requires a cabinet. The Klipsch R-120SW publishes 29 Hz ± 3 dB from a 12-inch driver in a 16.5 × 14 × 19.2 inch box weighing 31 lb.
A soundbar chassis is typically under four inches deep. There is no clever engineering that gets a four-inch-deep enclosure to 30 Hz at any meaningful output, which is why every soundbar aimed at film comes with a separate wireless subwoofer. Once it does, the box count argument for a soundbar has already weakened considerably.
Where the soundbar genuinely wins
One box, one cable, one remote. HDMI ARC from the television and it works, with no receiver, no speaker wire, no stands, and no crossover settings to get wrong.
It fits where speakers do not. A wall-mounted television above a fireplace with no floor space either side is a real constraint, and a system that cannot physically be installed is worse than one that can.
It is vastly better than television speakers. This is the comparison most soundbar buyers are actually making, and the soundbar wins it decisively. A flat panel has no cabinet volume and drivers firing backwards or downwards.
Nothing to set up wrong. A separates system has crossovers, levels, distances and a room-correction routine, and a system set up badly can genuinely sound worse than a soundbar set up by plugging it in.
Where separates win
Actual surround. Speakers behind you, at the angles the format was mixed for. Dolby publishes those angles and we work through the geometry here.
Music. A soundbar is a mono-ish array whose drivers are inches apart. Stereo imaging requires two sources separated by a real distance. If the system will play records or albums as well as films, this is not a close call — the front pair does both jobs.
Published specifications. Everything we recommend publishes sensitivity, impedance, extension with a tolerance and crossover frequency, and every figure is linked to the document we read it from. You can verify a match before buying. In the soundbar category you generally cannot.
Upgradeability. A receiver, five speakers and a subwoofer can each be replaced independently over a decade. A soundbar is replaced whole.
Room correction. Every receiver we cover includes it — Audyssey MultEQ XT on the Denon AVR-X1800H, YPAO with multipoint measurement on the Yamaha RX-V6A. Soundbars increasingly include some form of automatic calibration, but without published measurements there is no way to compare what it does.
The honest cost comparison
A soundbar with a wireless subwoofer competes on price with a real 2.1 separates system: a budget AV receiver, a pair of bookshelf speakers and a subwoofer.
The separates system will image better, play music properly, and let you add a center and surrounds later. The soundbar will take twenty minutes to install and require no decisions. Both are defensible. The one that is not defensible is a cheap five-speaker system bought as a boxed set with no published specifications at all — that combines the disadvantages of both.
Our recommendation
Buy a soundbar if the room genuinely cannot take speakers, if nobody will ever set up crossovers, or if the honest comparison is against your television’s own speakers.
Buy separates if music matters at all, if you can put something behind the seating position, or if you want to be able to verify what you are buying before you buy it. Start with the front pair and a subwoofer and add the rest as the budget allows — a good 2.1 beats a mediocre 5.1 every time.

Is a soundbar as good as speakers?
For films in a difficult room, a good soundbar with a wireless subwoofer gets close for far less effort. For music and for genuine surround it cannot match separates, because stereo imaging needs two sources separated by a real distance and surround needs sound behind you. Virtual surround relies on your room having the reflective surfaces the processing assumes.

Is a 2.1 speaker system better than a 5.1 soundbar package?
Usually, if the 2.1 is built from speakers whose specifications you can verify. A good front pair plus a subwoofer images properly, plays music properly, and can grow into a 5.1 later by adding a center and surrounds. A boxed five-speaker set with no published specifications combines the weaknesses of both formats.
