The Best Music Streamers With a Built-In DAC

Four boxes that put a network on the end of your hi-fi. One of them publishes two different sets of numbers for the same output, and is honest enough to print both.

A streamer with a built-in DAC does two jobs: it gets music off a network and it converts that music to analog. Buy one and your amplifier gains Spotify, Tidal, Qobuz, AirPlay and Roon without anything else changing.

This is also the category where specifications are least standardized, because the products span a range from a $250 box with no display to a streaming amplifier with speaker terminals. Ranking them on a single axis would be dishonest, so what follows is organized by what each one actually solves.

The two sets of numbers on the same page

WiiM publishes the Pro Plus’s analog output performance twice, in two places on the same site, and the figures differ.

Their comparison table gives 121 dB SNR and −113 dB THD+N (0.00023%). Their “line-out performance” panel gives 120 dB A-weighted SNR and 0.00032% THD+N (−110 dB) from 44.1k to 192k, plus a ±0.05 dB frequency response.

The first pair matches AKM’s published figures for the AK4493SEQ chip. The second is what the finished box does. Quoting a DAC chip’s datasheet number as the product’s performance is the single most common specification error in this whole category, and WiiM has — perhaps inadvertently — made it possible to see both. The number you should use is the second one, and it is still excellent.

For comparison, Bluesound publishes 0.0007% THD+N for the Node Nano and a signal-to-noise ratio it prints as “−118 dB”. The minus sign is Bluesound’s; a signal-to-noise ratio is conventionally a positive quantity, and we reproduce their sheet as published rather than quietly correcting it.

The one with a phono input

The WiiM Ultra has a dedicated phono input for a turntable without a built-in preamp. No other streamer on this page has one, and it is genuinely useful — it means a turntable, a television over HDMI ARC, and a network all arrive at one box.

But here is the honest assessment. WiiM publishes nothing about that phono stage: no gain figure, no RIAA accuracy, no input capacitance, and no statement about moving coil support. The stages in our phono preamp roundup all publish at least gain and loading, and the cartridge in our cartridge roundupthat needs 100–200 pF of load capacitance has no way to know whether the Ultra provides it.

So treat the phono input as a convenience feature of unknown quality, not as a substitute for a specified phono stage. That is not a criticism of the sound — we have not heard it. It is a statement about what you are able to find out before buying.

What the WiiM Amp costs you in measurement

The WiiM Amp is the same streaming platform with a Class-D power stage and speaker terminals. It publishes 60 W per channel into 8 Ω and 120 W into 4 Ω, plus a subwoofer output with a user-adjustable 30–250 Hz crossover.

Two things are worth flagging. First, WiiM publishes the power figure with no distortion condition and no “both channels driven” statement. Every amplifier in our integrated amplifier roundup publishes those conditions — Marantz rates the PM6007 at 45 W into 8 Ω across 20 Hz–20 kHz with both channels driven at 0.08% THD. Without a condition, a wattage figure cannot be compared to one that has one.

Second, the audio output quality drops sharply: 98 dB SNR and 0.0025% THD+N, against the Pro Plus’s 120 dB and 0.00032%. That is roughly twenty decibels of noise performance traded for the convenience of one box, and it is what a power amplifier sharing a small chassis with a network module costs. It is still well within the range that measures fine in a real room. It is simply not the same product.

Connectivity, which is where the real differences live

  • WiiM Pro Plus — RCA line out, plus coaxial and optical digital outputs. That matters: if you already own a good external DAC, the Pro Plus feeds it bit-perfectly and its own converter becomes irrelevant. It also has a line input, so it can digitize an analog source.
  • WiiM Ultra — everything the Pro Plus has, plus phono, HDMI ARC, a subwoofer output, a headphone jack, USB audio out and a 3.5-inch touchscreen.
  • Bluesound Node Nano — optical output only, no coaxial, and no analog input at all. It does have gigabit Ethernet where both WiiMs are limited to 10/100, and Bluetooth 5.2 with aptX Adaptive.
  • WiiM Amp — HDMI ARC, optical and line in; speaker terminals and a subwoofer out. No digital output, so it cannot feed an external DAC.

One limitation applies across the board: the optical and HDMI inputs on these units handle stereo PCM only. WiiM states explicitly that Dolby Digital and DTS are not supported. If you want a box to handle a television’s surround formats, that is an AV receiver’s job.

Roon, and why it is on every one of these

All four are Roon Ready. All four support AirPlay 2 and Spotify Connect. Three support Tidal Connect; the Node Nano adds Qobuz Connect and MQA playback.

Protocol support is close enough across this category that it should rarely decide a purchase, with one exception: if your library lives in a specific ecosystem — Qobuz Connect or MQA in particular — check the specific box rather than assuming.

How we would choose

For most systems the WiiM Pro Plus. It publishes real finished-product measurements, it has both digital output formats so it can grow into a better DAC later, and it costs the least here.

If you want a turntable, a television and a network on one box and can accept an unspecified phono stage, the Ultra. If your library is Qobuz or MQA and you value a mature multiroom platform, the Node Nano. And if you want to replace an amplifier as well as add streaming, the WiiM Amp — knowing what its measured output performance costs relative to the standalone streamers.

Can a music streamer handle Dolby Digital from my TV?

Not these. WiiM states explicitly that its optical and HDMI ARC inputs accept stereo PCM only, and that Dolby Digital and DTS are not supported. If you need surround decoding from a television, that is an AV receiver's job rather than a stereo streamer's.

Do I need a streamer if I already have a DAC?

Yes, if you want network playback — a DAC has no network connection. The right pairing is a streamer with a digital output feeding your existing DAC, which is why the WiiM Pro Plus's coaxial and optical outputs matter. The Bluesound Node Nano has optical only and no coaxial; the WiiM Amp has no digital output at all.
