Two questions decide a wall panel, and the second one is the one nobody publishes. How much does it absorb, and by what band? And how does twelve pounds of mineral wool stay on a plasterboard wall for five years?
Ranked on the coefficients, not the NRC
NRC is the average of the 250 Hz, 500 Hz, 1 kHz and 2 kHz bands. It excludes 125 Hz by definition, which is the band where wall panels are weakest and where a listening room usually has its worst problem. A panel can hold an NRC of 1.00 and absorb twelve percent of the energy at 125 Hz — and one on this page does exactly that.

The ATS panel wins the ranking because it is the only product here that publishes a full measured curve and posts the strongest figures across the range that carries speech and imaging. Its 125 Hz figure of 0.12 is genuinely poor, and ATS publishes it anyway.
The Primacoustic kit is second on a technicality that is worth understanding. Primacoustic publishes the whole curve, which is better practice than an NRC — but the kit’s main panels are the 1.5 in Control Columns, and that row is marked “typical performance based on quarter wavelength calculations”. Only the 1 in Scatter Block row is lab-measured at Riverbank. We rank on the measured row.
The mounting problem, which is the actual reason people give up
ATS publishes about 12 lb per 24 × 48 in panel. That is not a picture hook. A panel that size on plasterboard needs either a fixing into a stud or an anchor rated well above the panel weight, and it needs two of them because the load is spread across the top edge.
The four products here divide cleanly by how they attach:
- ATS panels— a framed panel with a wood back, so it hangs like a heavy picture. Solid, permanent, and it needs real fixings.
- Primacoustic London 8— ships with 16 Surface Impalers, which are the manufacturer’s own mounting hardware. It is the only kit here where mounting is designed rather than left to you.
- Auralex Roominator— 72 EZ-Stick Pro tabs in the box. Adhesive tabs on foam are light enough to work, and adhesive on painted plaster is the classic way to remove paint when the panels come down.
- Arrowzoom and BXI— no mounting system published at all.
If the room is rented, this is the deciding spec and it outranks the coefficients. Foam tiles on adhesive tabs are the low-risk option not because they absorb better — they absorb considerably worse — but because a deposit is a real cost.
How many panels a wall actually needs
The two panels at the first reflection points do the most work per dollar of anything in this category. Beyond that, coverage arithmetic starts to matter, and the Primacoustic kit is the only product here whose maker states a room size it is rated for.

Note what Primacoustic is really saying: 20 square feet of panel is rated for a 100 square foot floor, not a 100 square foot wall. A starter kit is a first reflection treatment, not a wall treatment, and reading it as the latter is the most common way people conclude that panels “did nothing”.
Coverage percentage is a planning heuristic, not a physical prediction. What actually changes is total absorption in the room, which depends on where the panels are as much as how many there are — two panels at the reflection points beat six panels spread evenly across a wall. The two we rank last, and why they are still ranked
Arrowzoom publishes a technical data table that begins at 250 Hz, on a page that acknowledges in its own text that “ASTM C423 tests 125Hz-4000Hz, but NRC calculations use 250Hz-2000Hz”. They know the band exists and they do not publish it. Their table is also headed “NRC Data Table” and contains no NRC column.
BXI has no locatable manufacturer site and no datasheet. Every figure circulating for it — the NRC, the density, the flame rating — appears only in retailer listings. We do not repeat those, and for a 3/8 in polyester panel the widely-quoted NRC is not plausible next to Auralex’s 2 in foam measuring 0.65 by the same standard.
Both stay on the page because they are what people actually buy, and saying “this is the data gap” is more useful than pretending the products do not exist. Building your own is the other answer to a thin datasheet.
What wall panels do not do
They do not stop sound reaching the next room. The ATS panel’s 0.12 at 125 Hz works out to roughly half a decibel of reduction in the band that travels through building structure, and absorption and isolation want opposite materials. They also do not fix a room mode; that is a corner problem, not a wall problem.
