A DAC on a desk has a different job from a DAC in a hi-fi rack, and the specs that decide it are further down the sheet. The conversion quality across everything here is far better than the room and the speakers will resolve. What varies usefully is the USB implementation, the power arrangement and the output level.
The USB interface, which is the spec nobody reads
The DAC chip converts; a separate chip receives USB and clocks the data into it. That second chip is where computer-specific problems live — driver requirements, sample-rate handling and whether the thing works at all on a given machine.

Everything here is USB Audio Class 2, which is the specification that matters practically: it means macOS and Linux need no driver at all, and modern Windows does not either. Schiit publishes UAC2 explicitly for the Modi 5.
The sample-rate ceilings are the least important column on that table. What 24-bit and 192 kHz actually buy is a short answer, and nothing you can buy plays music at 768 kHz.
Bus power, and the spec it changes
A desktop DAC running on USB bus power is one cable. A DAC needing its own supply is two, and a mains transformer near your computer. Most people want the first, and one product here shows exactly what that choice costs.
Schiit publishes two output levels for the Modi 5: 1.5 V RMS on USB power and 2.0 V RMS with the external supply. That is a genuine 2.5 dB difference in output level, published by the manufacturer, dependent on how you power it.

20 × log₁₀(2.0 ÷ 1.5) = 2.5 dB
Two and a half decibels is small but not nothing, and it matters most in a comparison: a bus-powered Modi 5 against a Topping E30 II at 2.1 V will sound quieter at the same volume setting, and louder is routinely mistaken for better. Level-match before you conclude anything about two DACs.
This is output level, not performance — it says nothing about distortion or noise. It matters for two reasons: informal A/B comparisons where the louder unit usually “wins”, and gain staging into a power amplifier with limited input sensitivity. Schiit deserves credit for publishing both figures; most manufacturers publish the flattering one.
Which one for which desk
Topping E30 IIfirst for a desktop feeding powered speakers. It publishes a preamp mode with variable output, a 20 Ω output impedance, THD+N below 0.00015% and 123 dB signal-to-noise, and it takes optical and coaxial as well as USB. Preamp mode is what lets you control volume without a separate box.
FiiO K11if headphones are part of the job. It publishes 520 mW into 32 Ω single-ended and 1,400 mW balanced, plus LO/PO switching where each output remembers its own volume — a small feature that matters daily on a desk shared between headphones and speakers.
SMSL SU-1 for the smallest, cheapest competent option. XMOS XU-316, AK4493S, 2.0 V RMS, 121 dB signal-to-noise, RCA out only and no headphone amplifier at all. It does one job.
Schiit Modi 5 if you want the output-level choice documented above, three inputs and a published 118 dB signal-to-noise. Schiit is the only maker here that does not publish its USB interface chip.
Topping D10s for one specific problem: it has optical and coaxial S/PDIF outputs as well as RCA, so it doubles as a USB-to-S/PDIF bridge. That is what rescues an older receiver or amplifier with no USB input.
FiiO K7if the desk is also the hi-fi. Line in as well as out, three output modes (headphone, speaker preamp, pure DAC), and THX AAA 788+ amplification publishing 1,220 mW into 32 Ω. It is the largest and most expensive thing here and it replaces the most boxes.
What does not differentiate them
The measured performance. Every DAC on this page publishes distortion and noise figures far beyond what a room, a speaker or a pair of ears will resolve — THD+N from 0.00013% to 0.0005%, signal-to-noise from 116 to 123 dB.
We have not measured any of them and we do not assert that any sounds different from any other. What we can say is that if you are choosing on the published numbers alone, you are choosing between figures that are all past the point of audibility, and the practical specs — inputs, outputs, power, preamp mode — are the ones that will actually change your day. What a DAC does and does not change is the honest version of this argument.
The connection question
USB is the obvious choice from a computer and it is usually the right one, but not always. If the computer is noisy electrically, or if it sits far from the system, optical isolates the two galvanically and that is a real advantage.
